Carolina Creations Fine Art and Contemporary Craft Gallery, 317 Pollock Street in Downtown New Bern, opens the Christmas season with handcrafted nativities, ornaments made from clay, blown glass and metal, and new paintings by gallery artists. The show opens during the Downtown New Bern ArtWalk, November 14, 5-8 p.m.
Sarah Grant—now known for her unique furniture, mirrors, and accessories— began her work in wood in 1986 by creating one-of-a-kind nativities.
Don Drumm’s nativities are created in aluminum and pewter, mediums in which he has worked for a wide range of public, commercial, and private commissions in the U.S. and abroad. He has
been a pioneer in the use of contemporary building materials and techniques for the creation of arts and crafts.
Karlene Koch Voepel started making her tiny nativities in 1980, after her daughter was born.
Both a traditional nativity and a Southwest nativity (which includes an armadillo) are in this show.
Sarah Meadows lives and works in Pennsylvania and is known for her stoneware animals and balloon people. Meadows has created small, affordable reproductions of her nativities for
the show.
South Carolinians Sue and Jim Chisholm create their nativities from slabs of white porcelain impressed with items from their collection of antique lace and treasures.
Ornaments in the show include those of the following artists:
• Jason Probstein of Asheville, who works with glass tubing and rod with a torch to heat, then shape, his pieces.
• Wayne Village Pottery’s New Bern Bear ornaments, made from redware clay found in the shop’s back yard.
• Bill Hicks’s red clay reindeer, each with a Santa hat and twig antlers.
• Judson Guerard’s handblown ornaments, beautiful in color and varied in shape.
New paintings include those of Brenda Behr, Sally Sutton, Mike Rooney, and Ruth Heppler.
The show is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday hours extend to 8 p.m., and Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Extended hours for the holidays are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 252-633-4369 or visit the Web site at www.carolinacreations.com.
