FREE CONCERT FROM VOCI ALLEGRE 2008

Voci Allegre presents its free holiday concert this year on Friday, December 5, at 6 p.m., at the
First Baptist Church, 239 Middle Street, New Bern.

This popular annual event, sponsored by the Craven Arts Council & Gallery, encompasses works from one of three large bodies of musical literature—British, world, and American. For more information, call 252-638-2577.

The American selections, sacred and secular, range from the Colonial era to the present, including spirited songs from the music literature of Southern Harmony and then works from Sacred Harp, which Director Lorraine Hale calls “a seminal publication and rich vein of musical art.” Voci Allegre will also present works of William Billings, regarded as America’s first native-born composer, and songs from Appalachia.

The program then shifts to some novelty numbers (with audience participation) and a bouquet of
contemporary American holiday favorites, including “Love Came Down,” a moving work by Pitt County native Loonis McGlohon.

Joining Hale are Brenda Parker Hardee, soprano; Yvonne Templeton, contralto; and Barry Templeton, tenor. Barry Templeton will also accompany several selections.

Handcrafted Nativity and Ornament Show 2008

Carolina Creations Fine Art and Contemporary Craft Gallery, 317 Pollock Street in Downtown New Bern, opens the Christmas season with handcrafted nativities, ornaments made from clay, blown glass and metal, and new paintings by gallery artists. The show opens during the Downtown New Bern ArtWalk, November 14, 5-8 p.m.

Sarah Grant—now known for her unique furniture, mirrors, and accessories— began her work in wood in 1986 by creating one-of-a-kind nativities.

Don Drumm’s nativities are created in aluminum and pewter, mediums in which he has worked for a wide range of public, commercial, and private commissions in the U.S. and abroad. He has
been a pioneer in the use of contemporary building materials and techniques for the creation of arts and crafts.

Karlene Koch Voepel started making her tiny nativities in 1980, after her daughter was born.
Both a traditional nativity and a Southwest nativity (which includes an armadillo) are in this show.

Sarah Meadows lives and works in Pennsylvania and is known for her stoneware animals and balloon people. Meadows has created small, affordable reproductions of her nativities for
the show.

South Carolinians Sue and Jim Chisholm create their nativities from slabs of white porcelain impressed with items from their collection of antique lace and treasures.

Ornaments in the show include those of the following artists:
• Jason Probstein of Asheville, who works with glass tubing and rod with a torch to heat, then shape, his pieces.

• Wayne Village Pottery’s New Bern Bear ornaments, made from redware clay found in the shop’s back yard.

• Bill Hicks’s red clay reindeer, each with a Santa hat and twig antlers.
• Judson Guerard’s handblown ornaments, beautiful in color and varied in shape.

New paintings include those of Brenda Behr, Sally Sutton, Mike Rooney, and Ruth Heppler.

The show is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday hours extend to 8 p.m., and Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Extended hours for the holidays are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 252-633-4369 or visit the Web site at www.carolinacreations.com.

2008 Annual Juried Sculpture Show

The 2008 Annual Juried Sculpture Show is in fine form at the Bank of the Arts and ready for the
public opening on November 11. There are just a few days left to make your reservation for the Private Preview Party on Friday, November 7, and to enter the raffle to win “Newborn,” a compelling work in bronze donated by Mitch Lewis to benefi t the show. See details about both on page 8 of this issue.

Greenville sculptor Jesse Morrisey explores the idea of growth through forms associated with the natural world by using industrial materials, primarily cast metals, as seen in “New Growth,” below. The pattern on the outside of the pod was inspired by a type of sea sponge that has
a similar design. Another of Morrisey’s entries to this show was selected by juror Dr. Lawrence Wheeler for the outdoor exhibit in New Bern’s Sculpture Park.

Length, density, placement, color, and direction all participate in the work by Wake Forest sculptor Burton Tysinger. In the aptly named “Oh!,” a layering of colored wooden dowels creates this free-standing form.

Tysinger also was part of the 2007 show with his work “Raintree.” Liz Vercruysse, of Herman, Nebraska, works primarily with local clay bodies that are fired with wood at her rural studio
in northeastern Nebraska. Her work is highly organic, textural and uses forms readily found in nature. Vercruysse’s passion for nature is evident in “Pod Forms as Icons,” an oversized representation of seedpods—reproductive symbols of our environment.

Dr. Wheeler, who is director of the North Carolina Museum of Art, says that in judging the works submitted from many regions of America, he encountered “the broad range of creativity and expression present in the leading galleries and exhibitions of contemporary sculpture in
the world.” Craven Arts Council & Gallery is pleased to bring that world to you.

We are most grateful to the patrons who have made the Sculpture Show possible:
• Founding Patrons Steven and Sabrina Bengel; First Citizens Bank; and the Sun Journal.
• First-Place Award Patron Pepsi–Minges Bottling Group.
• Honoraria Patrons Mark and Suzette Bardill; Dr. Jim Congleton; Dr. Andrew Davidson; EMBARQ; Haroldson Properties; Sumrell, Sugg, Carmichael, Hicks & Hart, P.A.; Stubbs & Perdue, P.A.; and David and Elizabeth Ward.
• Patrons Mark and Lynne Harakal; and the City of New Bern.
Also, thanks to the Craven County Tourism Development Authority for its ongoing support.

Messiah 2008

James Ogle, conductor, returns to New Bern for the 26th performance of George Friderich Handel’s Messiah on Monday, December 15, 7:30 p.m., with an open rehearsal that day at 3 p.m.

Tickets go on sale to the public beginning Tuesday, November 18, at the Bank of the Arts and Fuller Music. Prices are $15 for the open rehearsal and $20 for the performance.

For those wishing to join the Chorus, rehearsals begin Monday, November 3, in the Sanctuary of Centenary United Methodist Church, 309 New Street, New Bern, and continue on Monday evenings until the performance. There are no auditions, but singers need to provide their own G.
Schirmer score, available at Fuller Music on Trent Road.

Begun in 1981, the Messiah performances feature a 130-member chorus from the surrounding area, including Beaufort, Craven, Carteret, Pamlico, Jones, and Wayne counties. The orchestra accompanying the singers is composed of members of the North Carolina Symphony, many of whom have returned to New Bern each year for this occasion. The Craven Messiah Chorus was founded by Centenary United Methodist Church, Christ Episcopal Church, First Baptist
Church, and First Presbyterian Church.

For more information, call Pat Rowlett at First Presbyterian Church, 252-637-3270.

Jaycees Christmas Parade Guidelines & Entry Form 2008

2008 New Bern Christmas Parade
Entry Guidelines

The following guidelines apply for organizations desiring to participate in the
2008 New Bern Christmas Parade, scheduled for Saturday, December 6th.

Floats: Floats must be decorated using a holiday theme. Each entry is responsible for ensuring the safety of their float participants. Children on floats must be supervised at all times.

Lineup: Lineup will begin at 2:30pm along Trent Road. The first entry will be located at Fort Totten Park on Trent Road and the last entry will be at the corner of 7th and Trent Road. When you arrive for the lineup, it is easier to come in at the 7th and Trent Road location and a Jaycee will be there to give you your lineup number and then you can pull right in to your location. This should eliminate the need for people having to try to turn around on Trent Road to find their spot. Look for Jaycees (wearing name tags/shirts) for assistance.

Marching units will assemble at the City of New Bern parking lot on the corner of Trent Rd. and First Street

To help insure the safety of those watching the parade, we ask that no candy or objects be thrown from the floats. We suggest candy be handed out by persons walking the parade route.

Only one Santa Claus will be allowed in the parade. This Santa will be riding on the Craven County Jaycees Float at the end of the parade.

The Parade route will end at the end of Craven Street. Please continue by taking a right and unloading at the Sheraton parking lot. Please do not stop at Craven Street to unload all of your passengers, continue until you get to the parking lot. This will ensure there are no traffic jams with the other floats making there way along the parade route.

If you have any questions, or need any further information please call the Jaycees at 636-0303.

Thank you for wanting to be a part of this year’s Christmas Parade!
